Steven Blackie

Head of the Mercer's Investment Consulting Business in Edinburgh

 

Steven BlackieSteven is a principal and is head of the Edinburgh Investment Consulting Business unit.

Steven has over twenty years of asset management, pensions and investment consultancy experience. Prior to moving to Mercer in Edinburgh, he was commercial director for Aon's Consultancy business in Scotland. Steven also spent a number of years with Edinburgh Fund Managers and Merrill Lynch Investment Managers investing in emerging market and Japanese equities.

Steven's clients include several large schemes who are implementing complex liability driven solutions.

Steven has a BSc (Hons) in Civil Engineering and an MBA from Heriot-Watt University, along with a Diploma in Investment Analysis from Stirling University. He is an Associate member of the Society of Investment Professionals (ASIP, AIMR).


Paul Cavalier

Head of the Fixed Income Boutique, Mercer

Paul CavalierPaul is global business and investment leader for Mercer's bond boutique. Paul is a member of the International, UK and the European Manager Ratings Review Committees.

Paul has more than 25 years of experience within the investment management industry. Prior to joining Mercer, he was global head of fixed income portfolio management at Lombard Odier Darrier Hentsch. Paul spent 16 years of his career at LODH in a number of roles ranging from head of the tactical asset allocation team to head of UK portfolio management. His responsibilities were very diverse and encompassed strategic asset allocation, trading, portfolio management, client servicing and marketing. Prior to this Paul had brief tenures at Saudi International Bank, as an investment manager and at National Westminster Bank plc working within the currency accounts department.


Sinead Clark

Mercer principal

 

Sinead Clark Sinead is a Principal within Mercer's investment consulting business. Located in London, she is involved in advising institutional investors on the full range of investment consulting issues, including strategic asset allocation, manager structure, manager selection, and ongoing investment and risk monitoring.

Sinead is responsible for people management for the London UK Investment Consulting business and sits on the UK Mercer Investment Consulting Management Group.  Sinead has twelve years experience within the pensions and investment industry.

Sinead graduated with a degree in mathematics from Loughborough University and is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) charterholder.


Debbie Clarke

Head of the Equities Boutique, Mercer


Debbie Clarke Debbie is the global business and investment leader for Mercer's Equity Boutique, a unit within Mercer's investment consulting business. Based in London she specialises in researching Global and Global Emerging Market equity managers and chairs the International Ratings Review Committee.

Debbie joined Mercer in November 2005 from Watson Wyatt, where she was a senior investment consultant, advising a range of clients and researching Asian and Emerging Market equity managers. Prior to this Debbie was a fund manager for 20 years, latterly working for Friends Ivory and Sime as Head of Equities.

Debbie has a BA (Hons) in business studies from Plymouth University and is an Associate of the Society of Investment Professionals.


Russell Clarke

CIO, Investment Management, Mercer

Russell ClarkeRussell is Chief Investment Officer of Mercer's investment management business in Australia and New Zealand. In this role he is responsible for developing and maintaining the investment structure of the Mercer investment vehicles for this region.

Russell joined Mercer's investment management business in October 2003. He has over 18 years investment and financial services experience. Prior to his current role, he was manager of the investment research function at one of Australia's largest superannuation funds, UniSuper, where he gained valuable experience in the operational management of a large investment structure. Russell also has 6½ years prior experience at Mercer Investment Consulting, including as Head of Investment Research in Australia. He was also previously Head of Investment Performance Analytics for a major fund manager.

Russell holds a Bachelor of Economics degree from Macquarie University. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia and a Senior Associate of the Financial Services Institute of Australasia, and has lectured or tutored in investment subjects for both organisations.


Tony Cole

Senior Partner, Mercer

Tony Cole

Tony Cole is a Senior Partner based in Sydney. Over recent years he has led the Asia Pacific investment consulting business. Tony recently moved to a new role centred on key client consulting, thought leadership and representing Mercer with government and other agencies in Asia Pacific. He remains a member of the Global Investment Consulting Business Leaders' Group and a director of the Australian company.

Before joining Mercer he served the Australian government in various senior positions, including Chairman of the Industry Commission, Secretary to the Treasury, and Secretary of the Department of Human Services and Health.

In 1995 Tony was awarded an Order of Australia for services to government and industry. Tony is the Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research, a member of the Advisory Board of the Australian Office of Financial Management and of the Advisory Board of the Northern Territory Corporation.


Fiona Dunsire

Senior Partner and Head of Mercer’s Investment Consulting Business in the UK

 

Fiona DunsireFiona is a Senior Partner and leads Mercer's Investment Consulting Business in the UK. Located in London, she is involved in advising clients on the full range of investment consulting issues and has specific investment manager research responsibilities. Fiona currently is a member of Mercer’s UK Executive Team. She is also a member of the European Operating Committee for investment consulting.

Fiona has over 18 years of experience in pensions and investment consultancy. Prior to joining investment consulting, she worked in Mercer’s Westminster office, where she qualified as an actuary.

Fiona has a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and economics from Strathclyde University and is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries.


Mark Fawcett

PADA Chief Investment Officer

 

Mark FawcettMark has been an investment manager for the last 22 years. He has managed money at a variety of institutions including Gartmore (where he was head of Japanese equities), American Express Asset Management International (as Chief Investment Officer) and most recently, as a Partner at the boutique investment manager Thames River Capital LLP. He joined PADA in October 2008 as interim Investment Director.


Simon Fox

Mercer principal

 

Simon Fox Simon is a Principal within Mercer's alternatives boutique, part of the investment consulting business. Located in London, he is responsible for manager research and intellectual capital on a range of alternative asset classes and their potential use by clients. In particular Simon is a member of Mercer's global Alternative Ratings Review Committee and has been leading the intellectual capital in Europe on hedge funds,  commodities and timber.

Simon also provides broader investment advice for a number of institutional clients. This includes investment strategy and structure advice as well as manager selection, and governance considerations.

Simon has a degree in mathematics from Oxford University and a Masters in European politics and policy from the London School of Economics and Political Science. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) charterholder and has over seven years investment experience with Mercer.


Tim Gardener

CIO Investments, Mercer

Tim Gardener Tim is global chief investment officer for Mercer. Located in London, he is responsible for the strategic and technical direction of Mercer's investment business. Tim also advises a small number of UK funds on a range of investment matters, with particular emphasis on broad investment strategy.

Tim has over 30 years of experience within the pensions and investment consulting industry. He is an influential figure in the institutional investment market and is a well-known speaker at investment conferences.

Tim has an honours degree in mathematics from Birmingham University and is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries.


Tom Geraghty

European head of the investment consulting business, Mercer

Tom Geraghty Tom leads Mercer’s European Investment Consulting Business. He is a Worldwide Partner and advises indigenous and multinational institutional pension funds, both DC as well as DB, on all aspects of their investment arrangements.

Prior to joining Mercer, Tom was a vice president within a leading institutional asset management business in the US.

Tom is a member of the Chartered Financial Analyst Institute. He has a Masters degree in Business from Dublin City University Business School and also an undergraduate degree in Accounting and Finance from that same university.


Roger Gray

Chief Investment Officer, Universities Superannuation Scheme

 

Roger Gray Roger Gray has been Chief Investment Officer at Universities Superannuation Scheme since September 2009.

From 2006, he was CIO at Hermes Fund Managers; from 2002, an independent institutional adviser; from 1197, CEO/CIO at UBS Asset Management Switzerland and then Global Head of Asset Allocation and Currency for UBS Brinson/USB Global Asset Management. From 1983, he was a manager and then head of Fixed Income and Currency at Rothschild Asset Management, where he rose to Chief Investment Officer and Head of Institutional Business.

He studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Oxford and then Economics at Harvard, where he was a teaching fellow for International Trade and Finance and for Commodity and Securities Markets.


Brian Henderson

Brian Henderson

Brian is a principal within Mercer’s Investment Consulting Business based in Edinburgh. As well as providing clients with the full range of investment consulting advice, Brian is recognised as an expert in Defined Contribution (DC) Schemes and is the lead resource for Mercer investment consulting DC business across Europe. He is also a member of the Mercer DC Expert and DC Cross Business Leaders Groups.

Brian has over 16 years experience in various aspects of the investment business including investment consulting and performance measurement. Before joining Mercer in 2008, he was a senior investment consultant within the Investment Practice of Hymans Robertson LLP. Prior to that, he was director of The WM Company, a specialist performance measurement firm latterly owned by Deutsche Bank, and was responsible for the assessment of UK institutional Fund Managers/Life Companies as well as Institutional and Local Authority Pension Funds.

Brian received his PhD in Engineering from Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh in 1990 and passed the Securities Institute Investment Advice Certificate in 2004. Brian was formerly the Primary delegate, representing investment consultants globally on the CFA Institute Investment Performance Council and continues to be a member of the GIPS Investor sub-committee, and client reporting working group. He has also been a member of the NAPF property committee and the Society of Pension Consultants Investment sub committee.


Divyesh Hindocha

Global Director of Consulting, Mercer

Divyesh Hindocha Divyesh is a Worldwide Partner and the Global Director of Consulting for Mercer's investment consulting business. In this capacity, his role is to ensure that Mercer deliver relevant and appropriate solutions to clients. Divyesh continues to provide investment advice to clients across Europe and the Middle East. He is a member of Mercer's Global Business Leadership Group.

Divyesh has been with Mercer since 1989. Before assuming his current role, he was a part of Mercer's Risk, Finance and Insurance group.

Divyesh has a bachelor's degree in mathematics from the University of Warwick and is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries in the United Kingdom.


David Kaposi

Head of the Alternatives Boutique, Mercer

David Kaposi David is the global business leader for Mercer's alternative boutique, a unit within Mercer's investment consulting business, and he is a Principal with Mercer's investment consulting business in Toronto. He provides consulting and strategic advice to clients globally. David manages a group of over 20 specialists around the world who cover hedge funds, active currency, private equity, infrastructure, timber and other alternative strategies. This group is responsible for working with clients to establish strategic allocations in alternative asset classes, along with conducting manager research.

David is involved in all aspects of investment consulting and has an extensive background in portfolio structuring, manager research and manager selection. He is on the faculty of the School of Pension Investment Management, a fiduciary education program sponsored by Mercer and York University. He is also a frequent speaker at industry conferences.

David joined Mercer in 2007. Prior to joining Mercer, David had over nine years of investment consulting experience. He was previously the Director of Manager Research for another Canadian consulting firm. David earned his bachelor's degree in Commerce and Economics at the University of Toronto in 1990 and he is a CFA Charterholder.


Andrew Kirton

Global head of the investment consulting business, Mercer

Andrew Kirton

Andrew leads Mercer’s Global Investment Consulting Business. He is a member of Mercer's Global Operating Committee and the Investment Consulting Leadership Team for investment consulting.

Andrew joined Mercer in 1998 from a competitor and has over 20 years of experience in the investment industry. He is extensively involved in advising clients in addition to his leadership responsibilities.

Andrew has a bachelor’s degree in industrial economics from Nottingham University and is a qualified investment analyst. He is a member of the National Association of Pension Funds Investment Council. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.


Peter S Kraus

Chairman of the Board of Directors and Chief Executive Officer

 

Peter S KrausPeter S Kraus, Chairman of the Board of Directors and Chief Executive Officer, joined AllianceBernstein in December 2008. Previously he was executive vice-president at Merrill Lynch, where he was responsible for overseeing the firm's business strategy and investments, global growth plans and opportunities, and corporate acquisitions. He also led initiatives integrating the work of the corporate strategy and business development team with the efforts of the firm’s senior business leaders around the world to identify cross-platform synergies. Mr Kraus has more than two decades of experience in the financial markets, including investment banking, asset management and private wealth management. Prior to joining Merrill Lynch, Mr Kraus held several management roles at Goldman Sachs Group, Inc., where he was most recently co-head of the Investment Management Division as well as the head of firm-wide strategy and chairman of the Strategy Committee. During his 22-year tenure at Goldman Sachs, Mr Kraus also served as co-head of the Financial Institutions Group (FIG). He worked in FIG Tokyo from 1990 to 1991. He was named a partner at Goldman Sachs in 1994 and managing director in 1996. Before joining Goldman Sachs in 1986, Mr Kraus was an audit partner at Peat Marwick Mitchell & Co. Mr Kraus earned an MBA from New York University and a BA from Trinity College. Location: New York.


Crispin Lace

Crispin Lace Crispin is a principal within Mercer’s Investment Consulting Business, where he is responsible for providing investment advice to a portfolio of institutional clients. He also sits on a number of internal groups with specific responsibilities both for developing Mercer’s intellectual capital around strategic asset allocation and for creating a decision making framework that enables our global investment consultants to advise clients on allocating capital to new investment opportunities.

Crispin has over 21 years of experience in investment consulting having started his career with the Wyatt Company in 1987 and subsequently transferring to Watson Wyatt when the two companies merged. He was responsible for Watson Wyatt’s investment consulting businesses in Scandinavia and subsequently Germany before returning to the UK in 2006. On his return he was head of Watson Wyatt’s investment consulting business to DC schemes with a particular focus on the provision of advice on integrated funding strategies, the analysis and development of investment manager combinations to optimise investment efficiency and the selection and ongoing review of investment managers.

Crispin graduated from Durham University with a degree in Applied Physics and Electronic Engineering.


James Maggs

Principal, Mercer

 

James MaggsJames is a Principal within Mercer's Financial Strategy Group (FSG). His focus is on providing strategic investment and risk advice to corporate and trustee clients, and has advised a range of large and sophisticated clients in these areas. He is responsible for developing Mercer’s approach to advising on liability hedging and his research interests also include the use of investment banking products such as equity derivatives to manage pension risk.

James joined Mercer in November 2005 after working as an actuarial pensions analyst at HBOS. After two years in Mercer's Investment Consulting business, he moved to the FSG in early 2008.

James has a BA in mathematics from Cambridge University and is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries.


John Micklethwait

Editor-in-chief of The Economist

 

John MickelthwaitJohn is the editor-in-chief of The Economist. He joined The Economist in 1987, having previously worked for Chase Manhattan Bank for two years.

He is a winner of the Wincott Award, Britain’s leading prize for financial journalism. He has appeared on television and radio throughout the world (CNN, ABC News, BBC, C-Span and NPR.) and written op-ed articles for the world’s premier print news journals.

He is the co-author of several books with Adrian Wooldridge, also a journalist at The Economist, including ‘The Witch Doctors’, ‘A Future Perfect: the Challenge and Hidden Promise of Globalisation’ and ‘God is Back’.


Sanjay Mistry

Mercer Principal

 

Sanjay MistrySanjay is a Principal in Mercer's investment consulting business and specificially in the Beta Alternative Boutique in the Manager Research team. Located in London, he is involved in advising on the full range of private equity and private debt investment issues for institutional investors. Sanjay chairs Mercer's European Private Equity and Private Debt Research Groups. Over the years, he has been involved in evaluating managers (directs, secondaries and fund of funds), determining asset allocations, monitoring portfolios and educating clients in the area of private equity and private debt. Sanjay began covering private equity in 1999 and private debt in 2010.

Sanjay has twelve years of experience within the investment industry beginning his career with Mercer in 1998, originally in a wider investment consulting role. Prior to joining Mercer, he worked in the Pension Review Unit at Eagle Star, advising on pension mis-selling claims.

Sanjay graduated from City University with a first class honours Bachelor of Science in actuarial science. He is a member of the Institute of Actuaries.


Avinash Persaud

Chairman of Intelligence Capital Ltd

Avinash PersaudAvinash Persaud’s career spans finance, academia and policy advice. He was a top ranked sell-side analyst for 15 years and later a senior executive at J. P. Morgan, State Street and UBS GAM, before establishing Intelligence Capital Limited in 2005. He won the Jacques de Larosiere Prize from the IIF in 2000 for his essay on how trends in risk management and regulation were leading to systemic risks.

He is an Emeritus Professor of Gresham College and Visiting Fellow at CFAP, Judge Institute, Cambridge. He was elected a Member of Council of the Royal Economics Society (2007), is a Governor and former Member of Council of the London School of Economics. Persaud is known for his work “liquidity black holes” and investors’ shifting risk appetite.

He is a Member of the UN Commission of Experts on International Financial Reform, Chairman of the Second Warwick Commission, Co-Chair of the OECD EmNet, Deputy Chair of the Overseas Development Institute and a former founding director of the Global Association of Risk Professionals (2002-2009). He was formerly a Visiting Scholar at the IMF (2001) and the European Central Bank (2006). He is co-author of the Geneva Report on the Fundamental Principles of Financial Regulation with Brunnermeier, Crockett, Goodhart and Shin (2009). He is a member of the UK Treasury's Audit and Risk Committee and a Member of the Barbados National Council of Economic Advisors.


Tony Pugh

Mercer partner

 

Tony Pugh Tony is head of Mercer's UK DC services and a member of the Global DC Strategy team working with other national leaders to ensure DC experiences and best practices are developed and leveraged globally. Based in the London office, Tony is also a Consultant to a portfolio of multinational clients, providing advice to clients, both trustee and corporate, with DB and DC arrangements. These cover a wide range of sectors including pharmaceutical, retail and financial services.

Tony has 23 years experience in the benefits industry, having been with Mercer for 22 years.

Tony graduated from Reading University and is an Associate of the Pensions Management Institute.


Bruce Rigby

Mercer partner

 

Bruce Rigby Bruce Rigby was named Mercer's chief retirement strategist in December 2008. In this role, he focuses on providing new and innovative solutions to clients across the retirement and investments space. Prior to that, he was the global head of Mercer's retirement, risk and finance consulting business.

Bruce is also the actuary and consultant for a small number of major clients, focusing on corporate benefits advice.


Jeff Schutes

US head of the investment consulting business, Mercer

 

Jeff Schutes

Jeff primarily leads the US Investment Consulting Business overseeing all functions of the business and meeting with clients and prospects.  He is the Executive Sponsor of the Manager Research Boutiques and provides strategic direction to the Boutiques in order to provide access to both business and intellectual capital leadership and support.  He continues to advise larger, complex clients on investment policy and strategy, the selection of investment managers and the monitoring and evaluation of manager performance.

Before joining Mercer in 1995, Mr Schutes was Chief Operating Officer of CMS Financial Services, Inc. in Rockville, Maryland. He was instrumental in the startup of CMS, which specializes in investment consulting for institutional and individual clients. His responsibilities included development and interpretation of asset allocation models, manager selection, performance measurement, custodian searches, and NASD and SEC compliance. 
Prior to CMS Financial Services, Inc., Mr Schutes was Vice President and General Manager of CDA Investment Technologies, Inc. in Rockville, Maryland. His clients included public funds, endowments and foundations, Taft-Hartley plans, and bank trust departments. In addition to his client responsibilities, he participated in the development of proprietary asset allocation and manager search software and related databases.
Mr Schutes received his Bachelor of Science degree in Management and Finance from Purdue University. He also attended Daniel Webster College where he received an Associate of Science degree in Aviation Management.


Nick Sykes

European Director of Consulting within Mercer's investment consulting business

 

Nick SykesNick is European Director of Consulting within Mercer's investment consulting business. As well as advising a number of large United Kingdom pension funds and charities on all investment matters he is responsible for intellectual capital generation across Europe. He is also responsible for Mercer's Dynamic Asset Allocation process as well as being a member of the UK Research Rating Review Committee. Nick is a member of Mercer's Worldwide Partners Group.

Nick has over 28 years of experience in various aspects of the investment business including fund management and investment consulting. Prior to joining Mercer in 1997, he was head of United Kingdom equities and a member of the Board at Baring Asset Management. Prior to that he had specialised in managing client relationships with large pension funds and charities as Head of United Kingdom Institutional Business for Barings. Before joining Baring, Nick began his career with Baillie Gifford & Co in Edinburgh. He has many years' experience of both stock selection and asset allocation.

Nick has a Masters degree in philosophy, politics and economics from Oxford University.


Allison Yager

Head of the Real Estate Boutique, Mercer

Allison Yager Allison Yager is a principal in the Atlanta, Georgia office of Mercer. She is the Global Business & Investment Leader for Mercer's Real Estate Boutique, a unit within Mercer's Investment Consulting Business. Allison provides real estate consulting and strategic advice to Mercer's clients and consultants located across the globe. Additionally she manages a team of consultants and researchers based in the various Mercer regional offices. Her team is responsible for establishing strategic real estate allocations for clients, conducting research on all real estate and real estate related strategies, monitoring existing client real estate investments, and performance reporting for Mercer client's real estate strategies. Additionally, she chairs the Global Real Estate Ratings Review Committee of Mercer.

Allison has more than twenty three years of financial and real estate investment experience. Prior to joining Mercer in 2003, she worked for a real estate investment management firm for fourteen years. During that time she served as a client representative responsible for relationships with numerous pension plan sponsors, institutional investors and consultants. She worked with clients developing strategies for investing in real estate products such as private equity real estate funds, real estate investment securities and commercial mortgage backed securities. Additionally she served as the chief financial officer for the firm's largest commingled private equity real estate fund. Prior to that, she spent three years working for a public accounting firm.

Allison earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting from the University of Georgia. She is a Certified Public Accountant, a member of NCREIF and serves on several advisory boards including the Editorial Board of the Institutional Real Estate Letter.
